It was bound to happen...

So if you didn't know already, our complex at work is pretty much surrounded by new homes/condos. Our building is really the last industrial area left in all of Steveston. Only a few weeks ago they tore down the last one next to us, and it is already leveled for more homes to go up. Up till now our landlord has mentioned that they are in no way ready to sell at all, and are still renewing leases with the current occupants (we just renewed a 2yr lease).

So just last year they completed the townhouse complex behind our shop. Now when I say behind I don't mean 20' away. I mean 5'. Okay maybe 6'. Yes they built a home 6' away from our shop. Don't ask me, ask the morons who designed and designated the zoning for that. We were told with a meeting with our landlords that anyone buying a place has to sign in regard to the fact that they KNOW FULL WELL they are living next to a industrial complex, hense one thing... NOISE. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure it out. Most people in the right mind will look 'around' where they are buying a place before they do so. If anyone thought "hey, they knocked down these buildings, those (our building) should go soon too" was just wrong.

On till yesterday. Our primary compressor INSIDE our shop died yesterday. Its a large compressor (80g) which is covered by a soundproof box to save our ears. It goes off around ever 15min a day, and without it, our two CNC machines DO NOT run. ie: we make no money.

We've had a backup in the shop just incase, so we had to pull her out. Its a much smaller compressor (20g and less HP) so as you can imagine it goes off almost continuously with both machines running (sometimes they BOTH can't even run because it can't hold enough pressure).

Now obviously its loud since its not in a soundproof box. Up until people moved into the townhouses behind us, we would just put it out in the back, so the sound doesn't blare inside the shop and kill our ears. .. BUT we have brains. We know people live there, so out of courtesy we put the compressor out in the front of our shop.

Now during the summer months we keep our bay door open like most of the other shops because they just heat up with the tin roofs we have. So as you can imagine the sound of the compressor still fills up the shop, not to mention everyone else in the complex, HOWEVER nobody cares because they know its a INDUSTRIAL AREA.

So because of the loud sound still echoing inside out building, we moved it a few feet over, on the side of our building (small alley way that goes to the back of the buildings (where the townhouses are).

So while I was out today, the chinese lady that lives directly behind us came by and asked my dad to move it because it was noisy. I'm not sure of the exact conversation, but I think he said something along the lines of "you want me to STOP what I'm doing and move the compressor NOW?" "please" she asked. I think he then told her that he would do it when he had time. So he eventually moved it back to the front. As time progressed thru the day, we couldn't take the sound so we moved it back to the side.

5:36pm I get a email at our shop email address:

Hello sscadcam,

We live near by and noticed a loud compressor that started operating yesterday. Can you please move the compressor so it isn't between the two warehouses. The sound is amplified on the other side of the building and is very disrupting.

Thanks

Some loser steveston yuppie took the time to drive infront of our complex, get our company name, search it on the internet to get our email address, make up a fake email address on gmail, and email us.

My question is why go thru all that instead of getting out and coming to talk to us? Was it the fact that they saw 2 indian people working inside? Big welder Austin and his dad next door dressed in orange jail look-a-like coveralls?

Obviously I replied somewhat 'business like' with:

Hello,

Thank you for your concern. If you would like to discuss this temporary issue with us, please feel free to come by and speak with us about it.

I know although we are getting our compressor (the primary one) fixed tomorrow, we'll still have to run our secondary compressor for at least a few hours. Good thing dad starts at 6-7am ;) I think maybe i'll keep it inside, but just a foot away from the backdoor, so its even louder!

So we'll see what tomorrow lies for us. Police outside our door, an email, or a bunch of steveston residents with signs saying for us to leave. Whatever it is, they can kiss my hiney. Tomorrow calls for a call to our landlord just to keep them updated.

Now that i'm home, I actually think I should of taken the guys nextdoor advise:

Mike "Reply back and tell them to go live somewhere else!"
Austin "Tell them that you will comply, close your business down, not make any money, and let your 10 kids starve at home".
