Finally
After almost a month, I finally went flying today. Took off at ZBB and flew over to YPK (Pitt Meadows) for some circuits. Believe it or not, the first landing was freaken awesome. I totally surprised myself, and even John was impressed!
The next approach wasn't so good, and I came in quite steep, so John took over to show me a foward slip approach with full flaps.
Forward Slip
The primary purpose of "forward slips" is to dissipate altitude without increasing the airplane's speed, particularly in airplanes not equipped with flaps. There are many circumstances requiring the use of forward slips, such as in a landing approach over obstacles and in making forced landings, when it is always wise to allow an extra margin of altitude for safety in the original estimate of the approach. In the latter case, if the inaccuracy of the approach is confirmed by excess altitude when nearing the boundary of the selected field, the excess can be dissipated by slipping.
The 3rd time around I again came in steep, so I tried the foward slip approach. At first I never liked them, but dang are they cool. You can loose tons of altitude, in a short amount of distance. 4th time around I did a pretty sweet landing. Not to steep, came in just right. Took off, and flew back to ZBB and came in for a full stop landing. Also that landing turned out pretty good. I really surprised myself, having not been up in almost a month. My landings before were just horrid, and I had problems with them almost everytime. Too much speed was the biggest problem, then not being able to get low enough. I think I've fixed the biggest problem, and that is getting the speed down (nose up!) before turning base on the circuit.
I'm fried, i'm off to bed...
